The Board of Directors
Matt Schutz, Website Coordinator
I grew up climbing at a young age around places such as Tollhouse, The Balls, and
Tabletop (legal at the time). My first day was at a place called by my brother "the brain"
at age 11 and I've been passionate about climbing ever since. I've just finished my
bachelors degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Utah and I am now on an
extended road trip that landed me in Whistler, British Columbia where I hope to stay for
the winter and then....
I will always have a fond love for the Sierra Nevada Range and have a tradition to return
every year despite living far away.
Rene Ardesch, Blog Manager
Rene' is part of the Former SSCA Presidents Club, and he has been faithfully doing
the newsletter for over two years now. He currently resides in Exeter, Ca in the
shadow of Sequoia National Park. In addition to climbing, Rene' enjoys the weekly
drum circle in Three Rivers, and doing big road-bike rides.
Kenny Stroub, Vice President
I was first introduced to climbing through the Boy Scouts around 1984 in Southern
California. I moved to Porterville, California in 1988. I also spent a majority of my
time on bicycles and motorcycles in the Sierras; at the age of 18 I became a
professional cyclist with the opportunity of traveling the United States. My love for
the Sierras was ignited and I spent summers and weekends riding, climbing,
backpacking, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. This is my backyard and I intend
to use it wisely by taking care of it!
Family: I have an incredibly dynamic and supportive wife, a new baby boy, and the
best dog in the world!!
Profession: I love to learn and enjoy so much of what life has to offer. I especially
love wood-working, construction, building cabinets and furniture, and I own a
custom metal rain gutter business.
Aspirations: To raise the best possible human being. Adventure and travel as much
as possible. Oh, and maybe become a better climber...
Commitment: Work towards creating more recognition for the SSCA and support
my fellow members in creating and reaching obtainable goals!
Torey Votaw, Board Member
I started climbing in 1999 in Breckenridge Colorado and immediately fell
in love with the sport. I mostly followed trad routes and did some sport
climbing in Colorado. I then moved to Arizona for grad school where I
got into bouldering and continued to sport climb. I always aspired to be a
strong trad leader and when I moved to this area in 2004 I tried to focus
on improving my trad skills. I have been a member of the SSCA since
2004. Work: I am a physician assistant and certified Homeopath and I
work in Three Rivers. Goals: Take time to live life the way I want to and
explore as much of this country and this earth as possible. To pass along
positive energy to those I contact along the way. Personal philosophy:
Live intentionally.
Jim Schrodt, Newsgroup Manager
Jim is a Chemical Engineering major who now works for Chevron. In
addition to climbing, he can often be found kayaking with his family near
Kernville somewhere.
Eric McGee, Club president.
I have been climbing rock for twenty four years with the last ten
spent living in or near the Sierra. I currently reside near the beautiful
town of Shaver Lake. I attended my first SSCA event seven years ago
to find partners and check out the local climbing community. I
received a warm welcome, picked up trash and did some trail work. I
felt so good about the friends I made and giving something back that I
became a member. Passions other than climbing include spending
time with my girl, mountain biking, caving, telemarking and working
as an agronomist. I believe that the person who goes through life and
has the most fun wins.
John Vargas, Board Member
John is a long-time SSCA member and supporter based in Shaver Lake.
He works for an Environmental Consulting company and manages to get
a bit of climbing in as well. He also enjoys skiing in the wintertime at the
local Sierra Summitt.
Christine Abraham, Events Coordinator
Christine has been trad climbing for 26 years, and has done all the classics Yo. She has
been with us almost since the beginning, and continues to be a big help when it counts.
When not climbing, Christine can often be found on an adventure with her two kids from
the narrows of Zions NP to rock concerts.
Patrick Paul, Treasurer
I have been climbing since 1976 and specifically in the Southern Sierra since
1978.
I grew up surfing in Manhattan Beach, CA and spent a great deal of my
vacation time and weekends camping, hiking and fishing in the Sierra above
Springville, CA I have been a member of the SSCA for eleven years. Family:
A wonderful wife and two young adult children. Work: I am retired from
teaching high school English and now back to construction. Goals: Go
adventuring whenever I can with my wife and see as much of the world as
possible. Commitment: I will work hard to make the SSCA the best and most
fun grassroots climber advocacy group in the country. Personal philosophy:
Be responsible for what you create, don't make promises you don't intend to
keep, try your hardest to do what you say you will do. Don't say yes when
you mean no. It is better to disappoint someone with a no than to lose their
respect with a falsehood.

Daniel Moor, Membership Coordinator
I was introduced to climbing in 2000 by some college friends. At the time I was
living in Walla Walla WA, and learned mostly sport climbing until moving to
California in 2004. My favorite climbs are those that get you somewhere with a
view, usually trad routes in as remote places as possible. I am really enjoying
traditional climbing and want to work on some first ascents sometime... Family:
Currently single, though working on changing that. Work: I teach Jr. high and
high school Science and Math at a private school in Exeter, CA. I have also
worked to help the SSCA since joining in 2006. Philosophy: Do what you love,
love what you do. I love climbing and am committed to seeing the SSCA do
great things in the future!
Jerry Jessrun, Board Member.
I don't remember how I first met Jerry, but we have had the
opportunity to climb together in Southern Yosemite and elsewhere.
He's a great guy to climb with and has a rad family as well. Jerry,
